Near East Consulting Group (NECG) has 35 years of experience in helping local and regional companies establish or improve their corporate governance systems.
In the aim of understanding better the current situation of corporate governance in Lebanese and regional companies, we launched a mini survey last year that was sent to 120 high level executives and top managers in Lebanon and the MENA region. You can find below a brief of the outcome of the survey:
1) Profile of Respondents & their Companies
63% of respondents are mostly either Owners or Top Executives and Directors
88% of the companies are located in the Middle East
66% of the companies have more than 100 employees
51% of those companies are family owned and 33% are a Partnerships with several major owners
2) Current Governance Situation within these companies
67% of the companies have a Board of Directors or an Executive Committee
6 is on average, the number of members in the Boards / Executive Committees with 2, on average, Independent Directors sitting on their Boards / Executive committees
In the family owned businesses, on average, 2 family members sit on Boards / Executive Committees
87% of the respondents find that their Board / Committee is useful
3) Improving Corporate Governance
55% of respondents believe that Governance is very important / necessary to their companies
60% of respondents state that their companies are working on improving their Corporate Governance systems. Of those, 52% are asking for External Consultants’ advice to do so
Their efforts to improve their corporate governance are mostly directed towards:
- Improving their existing Board/Committees through establishing policies and procedures (70% of respondents)
- Or Creating an Executive Committee (33% of respondents)
- Or Creating a Board of Directors (25% of respondents)
